Fairchild Republic A-10 "Thunderbolt II (Warthog)"

Close-Air Support (CAS) Aircraft

Undisputed Tank-Killing King.

The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II ('Warthog'), with its iconic nose-mounted 30mm Gatling Gun, still flies for the modern United States Air Force (USAF) despite its origins as a tank-killing platform of the 1970s. The single-seat, twin-engine product was developed from the outset as a dedicated anti-armor solution capable of carrying an impressive war load into combat making it able to tackle most any armored and unarmored threat on the ground. Armored and well-armed, the platform - which debuted in October of 1977 - has succeeded in its given role for decades and some 287 units still serve with the USAF. Upgrades have kept the system viable for the near-future.

Qualities

Baseline Firepower

The A-10 was specifically designed around its powerful 30mm Gatling-style GAU-8 'Avenger' nose-mounted cannon - capable of shredding armor at range through short bursts of armor-defeating projectiles. Few battlefield threats can stand up to it.

Survivability at its Core

As a low-flying platform, the A-10 is designed with extensive armoring and elevated/spaced engine nacelles allowing it to absorb a certain level of damage and keep flying.

Broad Munitions Access

The A-10 sports no fewer than eleven total hardpoints, giving it access to all manner of in-service USAF munitions and ordnance. This includes AAMs, ASMs, bombs (dumb and guided), and rocket pods meaning no ground target is safe in the vicinity of the Warthog.

Ground Attack Roots

Succeeding types such as the Douglas A-1 'Skyraider', and carrying the name of the World War 2-era Republic P-47 'Thunderbolt', the Warthog was born for the ground-attack / Close-Air Support (CAS) role - it's in its blood.
